The Venerable Bede

Bede's Ecclesiastical History of the English is a window into an otherwise dark age. But was it all dark? People expected dreams to offer useful information; dreamwork wasn't called witchcraft and suppressed till much later. In Bede, predictive, clairvoyant and telepathic dreams are taken in stride. He didn't know the word, but shamanism was alive and well--even in Christian communities.

How true are these accounts? Well, Bede names sources, kings and dynasties; dates seem pretty reliable. At least compared to our tales of this time--like King Arthur. Real, legend? When, where? Yet he's not much earlier than these dreamers.
