Chris Wayan's journal, 1997/9/23
Walking down to the Park Branch Library, I pass two girls slouching and acting cool. Suddenly I see cool as silly, if it's pretense, and sad, if it's real--the rebellious slouch that passes for cool here just mimics a drug-fried nervous system! It's just like stupid white kids sucking up black slang from the gangsta depths of poverty--just like their parents sucking black gold from the flaming depths of Earth.
Cool is just borrowed body slang.
