I Wanted to Steal a Pink Woolen Sweater

Dreamed (early November?) 1952 by Jack Kerouac

photo of writer Jack Kerouac

I WANTED TO STEAL A PINK WOOLEN SWEATER from the outside counter of a Jewish clothing store across the street from the park---right on the spot where I was when I watched the boy with the runaway horse and loose reins---New Haven, but also the Chicago of Parks and just as I woke up the realization that it was only the real Frisco and the park was just a Boston addition to it---but I grabbed the sweater, just like a can of Spam in the store, tried to fold it under my coat, or in my arms, walk casually across the Montreal traffic to the Park, but as I woke up it seemed he saw me and also that I only dream-daydreamed stealing it---pink, wool, I dont even need a sweater, Edna had a pink one, I had a red cashmere one for awhile (where?)---(when?)---Barbara Dale in Greenwich Village)---it is the middleclass security of pink wool sweaters I wanted.

EDITOR'S NOTES

I posted this dream for its honesty. Here's the King of the Beats just wanting to be warm--wanting to be middle class.
