THE STONE THE BUILDER REJECTED
Nondream improv sculpture, 1999, plaster, 9" across, by Chris Wayan
My sculpture teacher used my plaster mix as a demo, and pronounced it perfect. But when I started carving it aggressively, scooping out holes, it was so weak and soft it broke apart.
On the other hand, my teacher rejected a classmate's mix as a dead loss: uncarvably dense. He let the yogurty mess harden in the bottom of a plastic bucket, then threw it out. I pulled it from the trash and started carving and found it strong, strong, strong: ideal for the hollow, undersea shapes I like.
