GALAXY FLOWER

Nondream digital picture 1993, by Chris Wayan

I just always liked this Georgia O'Keeffe quote about what she was up to with those flowers. It seemed to apply to all us artists--our basic task.

The image of a galaxy as a flower isn't just a visual pun based on their similar structures, but a comment on their similar roles. Nature's flamboyant moments! They're just the exclamation points in a far bigger, subtler story we're just barely starting to notice, let alone read. Roots and bacteria, or dark matter, most things are background--till they suddenly manifest a flower or a galaxy and we all wonder how THAT appeared.

A galaxy painted as a gigantic flower; this quote at the bottom has a few words crossed out and altered: Still--in a way--nobody sees a flower/galaxy--really--it is so big/small--we haven't time--and to see takes time like to have a friend takes time... So I said to myself--I'll paint what I see--what the flower/galaxy is to me--but I'll paint it small/big and they will be surprised into taking time to look... Georgia O'Keeffe 1939/me 1993.
