EDITOR'S NOTE

Chast presents this dream without comment, but notice what her act of rebellion is--keeping a diary. The intro to I Must Be Dreaming says she kept a dream journal in her teens, but gave it up; only now that her kids are grown has she resumed writing her dreams. Facing yourself--asserting, in a sexist and busyness-obsessed America, that you have a self to face--is the deepest rebellion. So if this were my dream, I'd say it's about dreamwork itself.
