I'm not me tonight--I'm my friend Dawn. I'm in a hotel downtown--here for a business-related conference at Moscone Center. I have to share the suite with an Englishman who says I'm disappointing. Not sure why. But I feel quite hurt.

So I leave. I glumly wander SoMa (around Moscone Center), unsure just where I'm trying to go, or why I came to this conference.

Come to a big parking lot full of busses fueling up by some dumpsters. Someone waiting to get on tells me they're the All-Filipino Bus Line, meandering through town to all the Filipino-heavy neighborhoods.

What's my response? I loudly announce "I wish I had a hundred-foot beagle!"

I know as I say it that I'm just saying it to shock. I have no use for a giant dog, other than drawing attention, and of course discouraging more putdowns from stupid convention-people.

Though that doesn't really explain why, out of all the wonders of the world, I chose THAT to wish for.

NEXT MORNING

• Dumpsters: I'm not surprised these show up in a dream where I'm Dawn--she had a vivid dream of crawling into a dumpster because it was the only place she felt safe & secure. With her permission I wrote a song about it, Dawn's Dream.
• Gigantic beagle:
  1. Snoopy, in Peanuts. He lives in his (vivid) imagination. So does a giant beagle mean an outrageous imagination? One too big to be welcome in a business conference...
  2. There really was a Beagle about 100' long once--the ship that took Darwin to the Galapagos! So wishing for a Beagle might mean an opportunity to get away to a place where I could do truly original work. Which clearly isn't at a business conference...

THAT DAY

Dawn calls to tell me she just had to attend a business conference that felt all wrong to her--as an exercise to toughen themselves against criticism, they were ordered to get in pairs and say hurtful things to each other!

Dawn walked out. But she felt so upset she got lost; she had to hike an hour through endless parking lots, seeking her car. No, not a hundred-foot beagle. But still.
