An elvish sorceress has found someone to love. She's old in years, a century or more, but looks about twelve. Her lover is younger by many decades, but is human--he looks his full age, sixty or seventy. So humans disapprove, assume this dirty old man's molesting a kid.
Understandably, they don't like the gossip. But they find a solution. A literal solution--a potion you drink to change your apparent age. But they each come to the conclusion "I need to take it" privately. So without knowing it, both do.
The result: instead of looking like Grampa with a little girl, now they look like Grandma exploiting a young boy. Oops! E for effort. But next time, maybe... communicate?
NOTES IN THE MORNING
- Potions: I just read RJ Bennett's The Tainted Cup: a series of murders by botanical potion. Turns out it's symbolic: vengeance for ecocide!
- Elf older than any human looks like a child: I've been reading the manga series Frieren, too. Frieren has exactly this little problem.
- Each changes for the other, ends up backfiring: O. Henry's classic story "Gifts of the Magi". At Christmas, a wife buys a chain for her husband's watch, by cutting & selling her long hair; he pawns his watch to get her a comb for her long hair. Oops.
- ACTION: uhh... Ignore gossip? Talk more with my nonexistent spouse? Never fall for a centuries-old elf? Quit drinking magic potions?
- So what the heck am I doing in my life that's like THIS? On the World Dream Bank I talk as if every dream's explicable, but that doesn't mean I succeed in interpreting them all, or even a majority. And beyond "A failure to communicate will cause problems", this one I don't get. Yet what a weird, vivid image!
