Spangle Tellurium: Climax
Dreamed Autumn 1993 by Luke Walsh
INTRODUCTION
These are the last two pages of "Messages from the Spangle Tellurium" by Luke Walsh, a cartooned history of his dreams, done for A Flock of Dreamers: a Comics Anthology. Earlier pages had an intro, a dream of dying that turns transcendent, and dreams of struggling to fly. Then came this fourth dream, just a nightmare of being chased--seeming more mundane at first. Until the next day.
AFTERNOTE
This dream stands out, not for the content (tangled, anxious) but its context.
- It's a direct response to the call for comics for the anthology. That is, Luke's dreaming mind knows he's auditioning. And it comes through with this ambitious predictive feat. Am I attributing not just ESP but will and creative choice to Luke's unconscious? Hell, yeah. Dared to show what his dreams can do, he achieves the impossible. Coincidence? Sure...
- Luke's earlier dreams were flashier--transcending death, learning to fly--but those could be subjective, Luke feeling better about Luke. But this one shows objectively provable foresight. The distinction's important--and often glossed over by psychologists, who after all work with (frequently miserable) clients; feel-good inner progress matters more to them than external trivialities like, say, violating the known laws of temporal physics.
Anyway, points to Luke for putting this dream as the climax of his piece where it belongs, instead of the superficially more "advanced" dreams of flight and transcendence he placed earlier. (OK, they're chronological, maybe he didn't make a judgment call. But still. Hats off.)
