Tehura mentions "electric fires cast dramatic shadows. Overused; a fad?" Unaware yet that human night vision's bad compared to cats, she assumes electric lights are mainly for atmosphere.
Many San Francsisco Victorian and Edwardian houses still have capped but live gaspipes on their ceilings--old gaslights. It's one reason those ceilings were so high--the open flames left a pool of hot, stuffy air up there you didn't want your head in.
The names of Anna, Toho and Tua apparently come from Noa Noa; two of Gauguin's many models/lovers were Anna and Tohotua.
